Sign Plywood is known as MDO Medium Density Overlay plywood is  used for signs in 1/2" or 3/4" thickness. MDO is made by bonding a resin impregnated paper to the plywood surface which improves resistance to checking and splitting.  It is then primed & painted. (Regular plywood is  not used for signs due to the rough grains).   We have build wooden frames as large as 12H'x24W' for billboards.
